Columnist's deft touch left mark | CJOnline.com

If you ever read Naomi Patterson?s columns in The Topeka Capital-Journal, or happened across some of her award-winning poetry, you had a good feel for what she was like as a person.

Friends and family members on Thursday said Patterson was the real deal ? a straight shooter with a tremendous intellect and wicked sense of humor who loved to lift the spirits of others, even at times when she was struggling.

After battling Parkinson?s disease since 2003, Patterson died Oct. 17 at her home at Brewster Place in Topeka, with her children, David Patterson and Carol Baldwin, at her side. She was 78.

For nearly three decades, starting in 1971, Patterson specialized in working with children in Topeka as a clinical psychologist at the Shawnee County Health Agency, the Topeka Psychiatric Center and Pediatrics P.A.

In addition to her professional career, Patterson had a variety of creative outlets. She was a stained-glass artist, magician and prolific writer, delving into poetry and prose.

It was from her writings that most people ? even those who never met her ? connected with her.

?I think her personality came through in all her writings,? said her son, David Patterson, 50, of Oak Park, Ill. ?I think people knew her really well from her columns. She was always very sincere.?

Patterson began writing columns for The Capital-Journal in 1997. Her last column appeared in late September on the topic of death.

Patterson also penned her obituary, and even there her sense of humor was evident.

Intermingled in the various organizations to which she had belonged, Patterson noted she was a ?former member of Sam?s Club? ? a reference to the warehouse store.

Despite Patterson?s career commitments and work in creative outlets, her son said her ?No. 1 priority was always her own kids.?

?I know my sister and I are both really grateful for what she did for us,? he said. ?We?re both tremendously proud when someone says some facet of ourselves reminds them of her.?

Baldwin, 47, of Tecumseh, was her mother?s main caregiver in her later years, when Parkinson?s disease began to take a toll on her ability to move and speak. Patterson moved into the Brewster Place retirement community in 2007.

Baldwin said it was ?an honor? to care for her mother, noting ?it was in no way an obligation or something I dreaded.?

She said her mother was her ?best friend, as well as being my mother.?

?The thing I admired about her,? Baldwin said, ?is she was what you saw, and she was what she wrote. There was no guessing. She was very upfront and honest. She was amazing ? very strong.?

Even as her mobility had diminished, Patterson would still ?wheel around? Brewster Place and bring laughter to other residents, Baldwin said.

?She was trying to make others laugh and have a good day,? Baldwin said, ?even when she wasn?t.?

Baldwin said her mother died at home, according to her wishes. The weather that day was windy, with gusts of about 48 mph, Baldwin said.

?That was my mother?s favorite kind of weather,? Baldwin said Thursday. ?The wind kept blowing for a week. I said, ?Mom, we get it.? Now, it?s kind of died down today. I think she finally got it.?

Evie Green, 81, of Topeka, calls herself Patterson?s ?No. 1 fan.? She said the two met around 2001 at a Kansas Authors Club conference in Hutchinson.

While at the conference, Patterson read some of her poetry to Green.

At that time, Green said, she ?fell in love with her genius and her way of thinking.?

From that point forward, Green said, she counted Patterson as one of her best friends.

?She was my mentor, my muse and my good friend,? Green said. ?I?m going to miss her.?

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Congregational United Church of Christ, 1701 S.W. Collins.

In lieu of memorial contributions, she asked that friends surprise someone with a bouquet or single flower in her memory.

Chinese premier's family has massive wealth: NYT report

(Reuters) - The family of Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, a leader known for his humble roots and compassion for ordinary Chinese, has accumulated massive wealth during his time in power, the New York Times reported on Friday.

"A review of corporate and regulatory records indicates that the prime minister's relatives, some of whom have a knack for aggressive deal-making, including his wife, have controlled assets worth at least $2.7 billion," it said.

The Times' websites in English and Chinese were blocked in China on Friday morning, and searches for the New York Times as well as the names of Wen's children and wife were blocked on China's main Twitter-like microblog service.

Wen's mother, siblings and children have amassed the majority of the wealth since Wen was named vice premier in 1998, the Times reported. Wen was promoted to the premiership in 2003.

Giving one example, the Times said partnerships controlled by Wen's relatives and their friends and colleagues held up to $2.2 billion in stock in Ping An Insurance (Group) Co of China Ltd in 2007, the last year those stock holdings were disclosed in public documents.

Wen's 90-year-old mother had one investment in Ping An that was worth $120 million five years ago, the newspaper added.

The Times said it presented its findings to the Chinese government for comment. The Foreign Ministry declined to respond. Members of Wen's family also declined to comment or did not respond to requests for comment, the Times said.

The Foreign Ministry and State Council - China's cabinet, of which Wen is nominally the head - did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment.

The private lives of Chinese leaders as well as their assets are kept under wraps, with personal details considered state secrets.

Still, cases against lower-level officials, often exposed by Chinese media, and reports on senior officials by western and Hong Kong news organizations, underscore the extent to which those with power profit from their standing.

Occasionally, top officials are caught and prosecuted.

In the biggest political scandal in China in decades, now-disgraced senior party leader Bo Xilai, whose wife was convicted of corruption and murder in August, has been expelled from the party and stands accused of corruption, bribery and sexual promiscuity.

Bo was expelled from China's parliament on Friday and is expected to stand trial in the near future.

The extended family of Xi Jinping, China's current vice president who is expected to be named head of China's Communist Party next month and president of the country in March, has also amassed great wealth, according to an earlier news report.

Xi's relatives have investments in companies with assets of $375 million, and an 18 percent indirect stake in a company with $1.7 billion in assets, Bloomberg news reported in June.

Bloomberg's website has been blocked in China since that report was published, underscoring the sensitivity of the Party and government towards such revelations about top leaders.

In the case of Wen and his relatives, the names of family members "have been hidden behind layers of partnerships and investment vehicles involving friends, work colleagues and business partners," the New York Times said.

It said Wen's family's holdings include a villa development project in Beijing, a tire factory in northern China, a company involved in building some of the venues for Beijing's 2008 Olympics including the "Bird's Nest" main stadium, and Ping An Insurance, one of the world's largest financial services companies.

Wen's younger brother has a company that was awarded more than $30 million in government contracts and subsidies for waste water treatment and medical waste disposal in some of China's biggest cities, and controls $200 million in assets in a number of companies, the Times said, basing its estimate on government records.

The Chinese public has a fondness for Wen, who is often referred to as "Grandpa Wen" in the media, for his common touch with ordinary Chinese, and his penchant for rushing to console victims of disasters, such as earthquakes and major accidents.

Giants beat Tigers 2-0 in World Series Game 2

The final score is Giants 2, Tigers 0.

Sergio Romo closed out a two-hit shutout for Madison Bumgarner and the Giants, who took a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven World Series.

After a travel day on Friday, Game 3 is Saturday night in Detroit with Ryan Vogelsong set to pitch for San Francisco against Anibal Sanchez.

___

San Francisco loaded the bases on three walks in the eighth and Hunter Pence's sacrifice fly made it 2-0.

Angel Pagan got things started with a leadoff walk and a stolen base ? which won everyone in America a free taco from Taco Bell on Oct. 30.

Giants playing small ball, executing well.

___

San Francisco breaks through for a run in the seventh.

Hunter Pence led off with a single that chased Tigers starter Doug Fister after 114 pitches. Rookie left-hander Drew Smyly got two strikes on Brandon Belt, then walked him. Gregor Blanco went up looking to sacrifice and his bunt was so perfect that it hugged the third base line for a hit that loaded the bases.

Brandon Crawford grounded into a 4-6-3 double play, giving the Giants a 1-0 lead. They are 7-1 when scoring first this postseason.

Madison Bumgarner was lifted for pinch-hitter Ryan Theriot, who struck out to end the seventh. What an outstanding bounce-back effort by Bumgarner, who gave up only two hits and struck out eight in seven innings.

Santiago Casilla works a 1-2-3 eighth and San Francisco is three outs from taking a 2-0 lead to Detroit.

___

Detroit needs Prince Fielder to start producing before it's too late. He's having a tough postseason.

Miguel Cabrera drew a leadoff walk in the top of the seventh inning, outlasting Madison Bumgarner in a nine-pitch at-bat.

Fielder took a huge hack on the next pitch and swung through it. Then he bounced back to the mound for a 1-6-3 double play, snuffing out a potential rally.

A fired-up Bumgarner pumped his fist and yelled.

Fielder began the night hitting .214 with a homer and three RBIs in the postseason.

Bumgarner has been crafty all night, striking out eight while throwing only 86 pitches through seven innings. Game 2 is still scoreless in the bottom of the seventh.

___

We've got a pitchers' duel in Game 2 of the World Series.

Scoreless through 5? innings. Both teams have two hits.

Tigers pitcher Doug Fister appears completely unfazed by the line drive that deflected off his head in the second inning. He's retired 10 straight.

Fister gets great torque and natural movement on the ball by unfolding that 6-foot-8 frame. Some nasty stuff.

Giants lefty Madison Bumgarner, only 23 years old, is hitting the corners and looks much better than he did during the NL playoffs, when he had an 11.25 ERA in two starts. He has eight strikeouts.

Detroit is getting some good swings against Bumgarner, but the right-handers have hooked a few balls foul.

___

A frustrating fourth inning for Detroit.

Omar Infante led off with an infield single and Miguel Cabrera got ahead in the count before smoking a line drive that was caught by third baseman Pablo Sandoval.

Cabrera pounded his chest once and looked up toward the sky.

Prince Fielder flied out to the left-field warning track and Infante was picked off when he tried to steal second.

The umpires have been terrific tonight.

___

Somehow, Doug Fister appears to be OK.

Gregor Blanco hit a line drive right off the side of Fister's head in the second inning. The ball caromed high in the air and landed in center field for a single.

Fister, however, never went down and never appeared to be hurt.

Tigers manager Jim Leyland, pitching coach Jeff Jones and a trainer all came out to check on Fister, who said he was fine.

Very, very fortunate.

Game is still scoreless after three innings.

___

Early mistake by the Tigers, who squandered a chance at a big inning with some overly aggressive baserunning.

Fielder was hit by a pitch to open the second and Delmon Young grounded a double inside third base. Chugging around the bases, the hefty Fielder was waved home by third base coach Gene Lamont and cut down on a close play at the plate.

Lamont should have held Fielder at third, setting up the Tigers with two runners in scoring position and nobody out. Instead, Fielder made the first out at home plate ? a definite no-no. Detroit didn't score in the inning.

Plate umpire Dan Iassogna made an excellent call ? replays showed catcher Buster Posey's sweep tag was just in time. Moments later, Fielder screamed in the dugout.

San Francisco executed a fine double cutoff on the play, with second baseman Marco Scutaro ? who else? ? making the relay throw to the plate. He alertly dashed over toward the left-field line to be the second cutoff man. Nice defensive fundamentals.

FOX said it was the first 7-4-2 putout in World Series history.

___

Strong start for Tigers right-hander Doug Fister as well.

He struck out leadoff man Angel Pagan, flashed a nice curve and retired Game 1 star Pablo Sandoval on a fly to left for a 1-2-3 first inning.

___

Great start for Madison Bumgarner, who really struggled during the NL playoffs.

Two strikeouts to start the game and then he gets Miguel Cabrera on a grounder to shortstop with a low breaking ball.

Bumgarner got a little help on the corners and at the top of the strike zone from plate umpire Dan Iassogna. A couple of close pitches, could have gone either way. Bumgarner doesn't appear to be throwing as hard as usual, but he hit his spots in the first inning.

___

Welcome back to the World Series.

Now that Justin Verlander lost, the Tigers are in trouble. That seems to be the conventional wisdom, at least.

Hardly anyone was expecting baseball's top pitcher to turn in such a dud during Game 1 in San Francisco on Wednesday night. And most observers who picked Detroit to win this World Series were probably counting on Verlander to put his team ahead in the opener.

But don't brush off the Tigers just yet. Doug Fister is certainly capable of coming through with a big game, and Giants starter Madison Bumgarner is a question mark in Game 2 tonight.

First pitch coming up in a few minutes.

___

Bumgarner won 16 games during the regular season but looked fatigued during the National League playoffs. He went 0-2 with an 11.25 ERA in two outings and was removed from the rotation during the NLCS, replaced by Tim Lincecum.

It will be interesting to see how Bumgarner responds after a little break. He worked on his delivery in the bullpen, and manager Bruce Bochy chose the young lefty over Lincecum for this start.

___

Tigers manager Jim Leyland says Fister is an intense competitor, and there's plenty of pressure on him tonight. Fister, pitching on 11 days' rest, held the Yankees scoreless for 6 1-3 innings in the ALCS opener and has a 1.35 ERA in two postseason starts.

Recent history favors the Giants, though. Sixteen of the past 17 home teams to win Game 1 went on to win the World Series.

Extra weight tied to higher risk of hospitalization: study

(Reuters) - Regardless of lifestyle and other health-related factors, heavier people were more likely than lean ones to be hospitalized for a variety of conditions, according to an Australian study.

What's more, this was the case not just for obese people but also for those who were merely overweight as well, the researchers wrote in the International Journal of Obesity.

Among middle-aged adults, researchers found that every extra body mass index (BMI) point - equal to about 2.7 to 3.2 kilograms (six or seven lbs) - was tied to a four percent higher chance of being admitted to the hospital over a two-year period.

"There is considerable evidence that severe obesity is bad for your health, resulting in higher rates of disease and consequently higher use of health services and higher death rates," said lead author Rosemary Korda, from the Australian National University in Canberra.

"What this study shows is that there is a gradual increase in risk of hospitalization as BMI increases, starting with people in the overweight range. In other words, even being overweight (but not obese) increases your risk."

Korda and her colleagues recruited close to 250,000 people aged 45 and above from New South Wales. After surveying them about their height, weight and other health and lifestyle issues, the researchers tracked participants through hospital data.

Over the next two years, they had more than 61,000 total hospitalizations lasting at least one night.

Korda's team found that among people considered in the normal range for BMI, there were 120 hospitalizations for every 1,000 men and 102 per 1,000 women each year. For those considered severely obese, on the other hand, there were 203 hospitalizations for every 1,000 men and 183 per 1,000 women, on average.

Overweight and moderately obese people had hospitalization rates somewhere in between.

A BMI of 25 to 30 is classified as overweight, while obese is from 30 on up.

That pattern held up even after taking into account whether participants smoked, how physically active they were and their general health at the start of the study.

Extra weight seemed especially to play a role in people's chances of being hospitalized for diabetes, heart disease, chest pain, arthritis and asthma, the researchers reported.

"Extending the research to overweight individuals... is a unique contribution," said Robert Klesges, a preventive medicine researcher from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis.

"Basically it tells tens of millions of Americans that, 'you are now at risk'," added Klesges, who wasn't involved in the study.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, just under 36 percent of American adults are obese. Another 33 percent are overweight.

"While increasing weight leads to increasing risk, this also means that a gradual decrease in weight is likely to gradually decrease your risk - ie, if you are overweight or obese, even small decreases in weight may make a positive difference to your health," said Korda. Sprint LG Optimus G review

Optimus G

The Optimus G brings LG's 'A' game to Sprint, but is great hardware enough to sign on for two years?

A high-end, premium LG smartphone on a U.S. carrier is like a hen's tooth -- pretty darn rare. While other manufacturers were busy releasing top-tier products on the carriers in this country, it seems like LG was focusing more on the value space, and its products were lackluster to a dyed-in-the-wool Android fanatic.

There's something to be said for bringing the best of the bottom-end, and the various LG Optimus One phones really were a standout for the entry-level market, but as someone who is lucky enough to get to play with the heavy hitters LG has released in Europe and Asia on occasion, I've been waiting for this. The Optimus G is the best LG has ever offered, and it's a taste of quality hardware from LG that everyone needs to look at twice.

But there's a dark side to LG's foray into Android. Ask anyone who was excited and rushed to buy the T-Mobile G2X. I was one of those people (I bought one for myself and one for the wife) who was awfully impressed with the quality of materials and the build of the phone itself, and felt the small niggling software issues would soon be ironed out. Here we are, over a year later, and still waiting for those fixes. To put it frankly, the software on the Optimus G needs to be great out of the box, because there's no guarantee that it will ever get any better.

Read on to see what I think of this one, and how my week with the best-spec'd phone ever made (so far) has turned out.

New! Sunday musings and affirmations 10-21-12 | Martina McGowan

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

?

??Affirmation without discipline is the beginning of? delusion.?

~ ?Jim? Rohn

?

Over the past few weeks and months, maybe even years, I have been writing increasingly about personal transformation. We have talked about using affirmations?and getting our butts in gear?. Beginning today and running for the next few weeks, rather than our usual affirmation poster or?wallpaper, I will post a weekly affirmation with some specific tips and questions to you dig a little deeper, and help propel yourself forward.?Don?t worry, I?m right here in the mix with you.

Let?s do this!

?

Affirmation: Each day, I move closer to my dreams.?

?

?My life is filled with almost endless possibilities,?and I can trust that my heart?s deepest longings are on their way. Because of these things, I have the courage to take action. Each day, I move a little closer to my dreams.

Some steps I take are big. I may enroll in a challenging course, begin the loan process for my?new business, or finish paying off an old debt. Whatever the step, however, I am confident that I am moving toward my highest vision of myself and my life.

Some steps are smaller. Just getting through a challenging day with a positive attitude is movement in the right direction. After all, I am happy about where I am heading in life. Therefore, maintaining positivity now is great practice, and is something I can do every day. Because I am in charge of my moods, my emotions and my responses to what is going on around me.

Sometimes, the actions I take may not even seem as though they connected to my goals. They may seem almost too small to be related my biggest? and best dreams. I trust, however, that as I hold my vision in my heart, I am guided. Each action I take moves me closer to my deepest yearnings.

Today, I trust in the fundamental rightness of my goals.?

I know that they, my goals, ?align with what I really want, and in time, they can be mine. Each day, I consciously take note of how I am moving closer to my dreams and give myself credit?for my hard work.?

?

Homework: Self-Reflective?Questions

1. What are some of my heart?s deepest longings?

2. If I feel like I am not moving forward towards those desires,?what seems to be in my way?

3. What can I do today to spur me on toward one of those dreams?

?

This is a short term?experiment.

My current plan is to do this every Sunday in preparation for our week ahead. But?I need for you to do four things for me.

1. Read the affirmation and statement aloud to yourself.

2. Write out your answers to the self-reflective questions. You don?t have to share them if you don?t want to, but write them down for your own benefit and boost.

3. Subscribe. If we continue this series, the only way you will get it on a regular basis is to subscribe.

4. Comment. I don?t usually press for comments, but as I continue to consider adding this additional feature to the blog, I am asking for feedback. If you liked it, or didn?t. If you see ways that I can tweak it to make it better. If you found the exercise helpful or not. If you had some kind of breakthrough, epiphany or wake up call. If you?d rather get this as a newsletter on a monthly basis. Anything?

Here?s the bottom line for this experimental feature. Because it will take some extra time to get these ready, no comments or feedback, no musings. Ok?

(AP) ? She dreamed a dream, and it came true. But what happened next for Susan Boyle?

The middle-aged church volunteer from a small town in Scotland became an instant global celebrity in 2009 with her heart-stopping rendition of the "Les Miserables" number "I Dreamed a Dream" on a TV talent show.

A week is a long time in showbiz ? and in our hyper-speed online age three and a half years is an eternity ? but Boyle is still going strong. She has sold millions of records, received an honorary doctorate, sung for Pope Benedict XVI and performed in Las Vegas. A stage musical about her life has played to enthusiastic crowds across Britain and is headed for Australia, and next month she releases her fourth album, "Standing Ovation."

But the 51-year-old singer who entered the TV talent contest to make her late mother proud is remarkably unchanged. She's still a bit frumpy, though she's acquired a new hairdo, more expensive clothes and a makeover. She still lives in her down-at-heel home town, has outbursts of anger and struggles to overcome her nerves before live performances.

It's a fairy tale, yes, but with dark shadows lurking in the corners.

"People can't accept that you can dream a dream, but part of the dream is also a nightmare," said Elaine C. Smith, a Scottish actress who knows Boyle and plays her in the biographical stage show "I Dreamed a Dream."

"Fairy dust comes out, but shrapnel comes out as well."

Boyle now has a car and chauffeur to take her to appointments, but she sticks close to familiar places and routines. She has bought a new house, a modern four-bedroom two-story in Blackburn that cost 300,000 pounds ($480,000), but locals say she often stays in the modest row house she grew up in.

And she still shows up occasionally to sing karaoke at The Crown pub.

"She belts them out like she used to and is not averse to a duet," said 20-year-old local Helen Cameron. "It's nice that this has not changed her. I think she's under a lot of pressure normally. Here she can be herself."

As well as having the support of her community, Boyle is well protected by her manager, Andy Stephens, and a close circle of friends and family ? a factor that helps act as a "psychological vaccine" against the pressures of sudden fame, according to Cary Cooper, professor of psychology and health at Lancaster University.

"If you don't have the proper social support system to protect you, your celebrity status can cause you enormous stress," said Cooper, who has studied the relationship between celebrity and stress. "She is still rooted in her friends and people who know her. Most celebrities aren't."

Boyle's life changed in a few minutes when her first appearance on "Britain's Got Talent" was broadcast in April 2009. The soaring voice emerging from the dowdy, frizzy-haired figure; the audience titters turning to gasps; the shocked faces of Simon Cowell and the other judges ? it was artfully staged television, but also a moment of genuine emotion.

"We judged her. Anybody who says they didn't is telling lies," Smith said. "She walked on and opened her mouth, and within minutes everybody watching was in tears."

The Internet clip went around the world, and keeps on going. On YouTube alone it has been viewed more than 106 million times.

Boyle's first album, "I Dreamed a Dream," topped both the U.K. and U.S. charts. So did her second, "The Gift."

Although Boyle's covers of pop classics and musical theater standards rarely make critics swoon, her three albums collectively have sold more than 14 million copies.

This month she's sung on "Dancing With the Stars" in the U.S. and performed in Las Vegas with Donny Osmond, a childhood idol.

It's a long way from Boyle's home town of Blackburn, a community of about 5,000 people 20 miles (32 kilometers) west of Edinburgh that lies in one of Britain's most deprived areas.

The youngest of nine children of a devout Roman Catholic family, Boyle had learning difficulties as a child, the result of oxygen deprivation at birth. She struggled in school and was bullied by other children.

She left school with few qualifications, never married ? though she later said she'd exaggerated in telling the "Britain's Got Talent" judges she'd "never been kissed" ? and spent years caring for her widowed mother, Bridget, who died in 2007.

The thing that gave her the greatest pleasure was singing, in church or during karaoke nights at the pub.

She has said she entered "Britain's Got Talent" in memory of her late mother, "to show her I could do something with my life."

All did not all go smoothly after her astonishing debut. During the final stages of the competition she got into a dustup with two reporters.

Although she was widely expected to win the 100,000 pound ($160,000) prize, she ended up coming second to dance troupe Diversity. After the series ended, she checked into the Priory, rehab clinic to the stars, to be treated for nervous exhaustion.

She still has outbursts of temper, and has said she still suffers anxiety when singing live before audiences.

"When I first went for 'Britain's Got Talent' I had such a feeling of failure and that's still part of me," Boyle said in an interview last year with the Daily Mail newspaper. "It's hard when that's been the pattern of your life. It's hard to believe those patterns have been broken."

Smith said Boyle's struggles ? reflected in the bittersweet tone of the stage show ? disappoint some of the singer's fans.

"They want the dream to come true and her life to be perfect," she said.

But Smith said Boyle's flaws are part of what makes her a star. After all, "you didn't love Judy Garland because she was perfect."

"This is a woman who is conquering the real fears she has," Smith said.

D-Day looms for Armstrong but case likely to drag on

PARIS (Reuters) - The Lance Armstrong doping scandal reaches a decisive day on Monday when cycling's governing body announces whether it has ratified the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency's sanctions but whatever happens the affair is set to run and run.

International Cycling Union (UCI) president Pat McQuaid will hold a news conference at 1100 GMT on Monday at which he is widely expected to confirm that Armstrong, 41, is banned for life and loses his record seven Tour de France titles.

Last month, McQuaid said the UCI had no reason to appeal against the USADA decision, adding that the ruling body was waiting to read the reasoned decision and case file published after Armstrong elected not to fight the charges.

The USADA report, released last week, is a 1,000 page document which shows, the Agency says, that Armstrong took part in a doping scheme on his way to his unrivalled success on the Tour from 1999-2005.

The report accused Armstrong, as head of the US Postal Service Pro Cycling Team, of running "the most sophisticated, professionalised and successful doping program that sport has ever seen."

It included sworn testimony from 26 people, including 15 riders, who described years of performance drug use.

If the UCI rules that USADA has failed to make a case, the sport's governing body will take the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

TAINTED ERA

Should Armstrong lose his Tour titles, race director Christian Prudhomme has already said he does not want them handed to anyone else given that the era was tainted by doping.

The UCI, however, is in an uncomfortable position because the USADA report said Armstrong told his then team mates Floyd Landis and Tyler Hamilton he made a positive drugs test at the Tour of Switzerland "go away" with a payment to the UCI in 2001.

McQuaid has said Armstrong made a $100,000 donation to the UCI in 2002 but "vehemently denied", according to the report, that it was part of a covering up of a positive test.

Armstrong said he was unfazed by the USADA report but some of his long-time partners have been, with Nike Inc dropping the disgraced cyclist over the scandal on Wednesday.

On the same day, Armstrong stepped down as chairman of the Livestrong foundation, although he remained on the board of the association he launched in 1997 to fight cancer.

Testicular cancer survivor Armstrong was also dropped by beer maker Anheuser-Busch , and, according to reports by ESPN, by Trek Bicycles and the energy drink maker FRS.

Speculation over a confession by Armstrong has been growing although he could face perjury charges if he admitted to doping during his career.

FINANCIAL FALLOUT

The Texan is also likely to face financial consequences if the UCI ratifies the USADA decision.

Promotional company SCA, which paid $7.5 million to Armstrong after he provided sworn evidence he did not use performance-enhancing drugs, could seek to recoup the money.

Meanwhile, Britain's Sunday Times newspaper, which lost $1 million in an out-of-court settlement following a libel suit, could sue the American.

Armstrong mentor Johan Bruyneel's case, however, will not be resolved on Monday because the Belgian has chosen to fight the charges in front of an arbitration panel, possibly later this year.

Doctor Pedro Celaya, one of the five people charged by USADA, has also opted for arbitration.

Doctors Luis Garcia del Moral, Pepe Marti and Michele Ferrari, who were also charged by USADA, have been banned for life.

Former Armstrong team mates who testified were given reduced bans.

Those still active will be back in time for the 2013 Tour de France, whose route will be unveiled on Wednesday as cycling's wheel continues to turn with or without Armstrong.

Los Angeles police explore Manson Family role in dozen cold cases

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Detectives are looking at the possible role of the Manson Family in a dozen unsolved killings from four decades ago, and believe old audio tapes from a bankruptcy case hold a key to the cold cases, a police official said.

The so-called Manson Family cult, a collection of runaways and outcasts known for their high-profile spree of at least nine killings in 1969, was brought together by a charismatic ex-convict, Charles Manson.

The 12 unsolved killings police are looking into had "similar circumstances, the same time period" as those committed by Manson's followers, Los Angeles police spokesman Commander Andrew Smith said.

"We think there's a chance that they may be related to the Manson Family," he added.

In 1969, Manson became one of the 20th century's most infamous U.S. criminals when he incited his mostly young, female followers to murder in what prosecutors said was part of a twisted plan to incite a race war between whites and blacks.

Among the victims was actress Sharon Tate, the pregnant wife of filmmaker Roman Polanski, who was stabbed 16 times by members of the cult in the early morning hours of August 9, 1969. Manson, now 77, is serving a life sentence.

If police can tie the Manson Family to any unsolved cases, it would confirm longstanding suspicions that they committed more killings.

The revelations about the number of unsolved cases investigators are pursuing comes amid a legal battle between the Los Angeles Police Department and an attorney for Manson follower Charles "Tex" Watson, who is serving a life prison sentence in California.

Los Angeles police, who have gone to court seeking to obtain eight hours of recorded discussions between Watson and his late attorney Bill Boyd, have disclosed few details on the cold cases, including the names of victims or dates of the killings.

The tapes, made more than 40 years ago, have resurfaced as a part of a bankruptcy case involving Boyd's now-defunct Texas law firm. In May, U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Brenda Rhoades in Texas granted the request for the tapes, but an appeal is pending.

"We're just trying to obtain these tapes to see if they will shed light on these and other cases," Smith said.

Los Angeles police Chief Charlie Beck had said in a March letter to a U.S. Department of Justice trustee that the LAPD "has information that Mr. Watson discussed additional unsolved murders committed by followers of Charles Manson."

Peace envoy to visit Syria to work out Eid ceasefire

AMMAN (Reuters) - The international mediator on Syria will go to Damascus in the next few days to try to broker a brief ceasefire in the war between President Bashar al-Assad's government and rebels during the Islamic Eid al-Adha festival.

Lakhdar Brahimi, the U.N.-Arab League envoy, told reporters on Thursday after meeting Jordan's foreign minister that a respite in hostilities could build confidence and help bring about a longer truce in the 19-month-old conflict.

"Yes I am going to Syria. This appeal we made to our Syrian brothers, whether in the government or against the government, to stop fighting in the three or four days of the Eid next week," Brahimi said.

A previous ceasefire in April collapsed after just a few days, with each side blaming the other. Mediator Kofi Annan resigned his post in frustration a few months later.

Since then the war pitting Assad's troops against a loosely-organized rebel force trying to end his 12-year-old rule has intensified. The daily death toll usually tops 100 combatants and civilians and fighting rages in cities including Aleppo, the country's commercial centre, and even the capital Damascus.

The truce would be self-imposed with no monitoring.

"This is an appeal to the Syrians themselves that they stop fighting and observe it themselves. This is not the political process or the solution required to the Syrian crisis," Brahimi added.

The Syrian government guardedly welcomed the proposal but said any initiative must be respected by both sides. Turkey, one of Assad's harshest critics, and Iran, one of his strongest allies, both backed the plan, in rare display of agreement.

Brahimi will meet Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem on Saturday, an official in Damascus said.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi said Damascus hoped his talks in the region, including with countries which back the rebels, could herald "something which leads to the success of a constructive initiative".

Brahimi's spokesman Ahmad Fawzi said the envoy, a veteran Algerian diplomat, was working on a new, comprehensive peace plan.

"It's difficult to put a timeline on it but it's all coming together. He has completed the circle with this tour of neighboring countries. He needs to go now to the outer circle, to Moscow and China, and look them in the eye and say this will not work unless you support it," Fawzi said.

Russia, which sold Syria arms worth $1 billion last year, and China have vetoed three resolutions favored by Western powers condemning Syrian authorities and opening the way to U.N. sanctions on Damascus.

The Kremlin denies trying to prop up Assad, who allows Russia to maintain a naval supply facility in the port of Tartus that is its only military base outside the former Soviet Union.

Moscow says Syria's crisis must be resolved without foreign interference, particularly military intervention.

GUNS IN DAMASCUS

Violence wracked the country on Thursday, from the desert eastern city of Hassake, where five soldiers were killed when rebels ambushed a military truck, to Damascus, where government forces were bombarding outlying suburbs.

The pro-opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said dozens of people were wounded when warplanes bombed the northern town of Maarat al-Numan, which straddles the main north-south highway connecting Damascus with Aleppo and was captured by rebels last week.

More than 140 Syrians were killed on Wednesday, including 62 unarmed civilians, 12 of them children, the Observatory said.

Syrian officials have questioned whether the rebels, who agreed on a joint leadership on Tuesday to encourage supporters to provide them with more powerful weapons, could commit to or honor any ceasefire deal.

But Brahimi said on Wednesday opposition figures had told him any ceasefire by Assad's forces would be reciprocated immediately.

"We heard from everyone we met in the opposition, and everyone (else) we met that, if the government stops using violence, 'We will respond to this directly'," he said.

"We hope this will be a very small step that would save the Syrian people ... because they are burying hundreds of people every day."

The total death toll now stands at more than 30,000 and international players fear that if unchecked, the war could expand into a wider regional conflict between Sunni powers sympathetic to the rebels and Shi'ites who back Assad.

Old Soldiers' Home Records | FamilyTree.com

Retirement locations for many of America's military veterans were either with family members in private residences or in a public facility known as the Old Soldiers' Home. The earliest such federal government sponsored veterans; home was the U. S. Naval Home in Philadelphia, PA, which opened in 1834. It was in 1851 that one for U. S. Army veterans was established in Washington, D. C. on 250 acres and named the Old Soldiers' Home.

Many individual states also set up their own retirement homes for soldiers and sailors in their state. Not just for military veterans, these state homes could serve for the widows and orphans of veterans. After the Civil War in 1865 as the veterans aged, it was organizations such as the Grand Army of the Republic and the United Confederate Veterans that encouraged states and the federal government to create these needed retirement institutions for veterans. Large numbers of homes were built in the 1880s for the aging veterans across the country. An example is the Michigan Veterans Home (for soldiers and sailors) constructed just north of Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1886. It continues to remain in operation. No matter what name was selected they were always referred to as the Old Soldiers' Home. Eventually many of the state created facilities were taken over and run by the U. S. Federal government. Many of these facilities also had a nearby cemetery where the old soldiers were eventually buried.

Numerous online sites offer information on the veterans' homes. With FamilySearch.org, they have a complete list with links to some of the databases having names of those soldiers and sailors who were in the Soldiers Home System. A reminder, it would not be just those veterans from the Civil War (Union and Confederate), but also those who were involved in the Indian Wars, Spanish-American War and World War I or who served anytime after 1850 in the military. You might not have located a certain ancestor, including a widow of a veteran and instead they were living at an Old Soldiers' Home.

Finding which home a veteran lived in might be difficult. Start with which state they were last known living in, not necessarily where they were born. From there check neighboring states plus any states where their children were living at the time. Using state archives and individual homes' records you can request copies of their records on an individual, which could hold a wealth of information.

The online site of Ancestry.com has a database titled ?U.S. National Homes for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, 1866-1938? which covers facilities in New York, Ohio, North Dakota, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Wisconsin, Tennessee, Kansas, Virginia, California and Oregon. These were run by the federal government, rather than the state institutions.

If you have not checked into the old soldiers' home records, these various sources would be a good start.
