Generalizations: House, everything is your responsibility, condo, shared responsibility with HOA fees and reserve fund for collective repairs, ie. roof, townhouse is a hybrid, with HOA but you own your own house and are responsible for upkeep, repairs, etc, sharing only in "looks and property maintenance". If you intend your place to be a pied a terre, then condo or townhouse is the way to go because the property will be maintained (through your HOA fees).
