Austrian priest: Dissent reflects church leaders' lack of answerability

ShareThis

DUBLIN (CNS) -- The leader of the Austrian Priests' Initiative said the dissident group's call to disobedience reflects the lack of accountability among those who exercise power and authority in the Catholic Church.

Msgr. Helmut Schuller told Catholic News Service that reform and substantive structural change are "essential for the future of the church" in Europe and the wider world.

The Priests' Initiative, which now represents 500 clergy in Austria, wants the Vatican to revive the "Lex Ecclesiae Fundamentalis" project initiated by Pope Paul VI following the Second Vatican Council. The project, which sought to establish a common fundamental code or church constitution similar to the U.S. Bill of Rights for church members, was shelved by Pope John Paul II in 1981.

"We are talking about providing basic rights for the people of God and a structure of participation in decision-making and feedback between the top, center and base of the church. We also want to establish a system of control for those who hold power and authority in the church," said Msgr. Schuller, former vicar general of the Archdiocese of Vienna and former director of Caritas Austria.

The Priests' Initiative was founded in 2006 and made international headlines in June 2011 when it issued its "Appeal to Disobedience" over its agenda, which includes making clerical celibacy optional, allowing divorced and remarried Catholics who did not receive an annulment to receive Communion, and advocating a softer line on homosexual partnerships.

Msgr. Schuller, 60, told CNS that the group is engaged with the question of celibacy because of the lack of priests and concern over its future implications.

"The No. 1 issue for the church in Austria is the future of parish communities. They need a new model of leadership," he said.

The second central issue for the group is the church's structures, which "must respect the rights of its members" and the operation of the institutional church's offices of authority. On the position of women, he suggested there is "a contradiction in respect of the church's message that men and women are equal before God but not in church."

Calling on the Austrian hierarchy to engage in dialogue with the Priests' Initiative, he rejected suggestions that the group is intent on schism. Though earlier this year Vienna Cardinal Christoph Schonborn publicly urged the group to recant its call to disobedience, Msgr. Schuller said the group is standing firm on the matter.

He said the real danger to the unity of the church is in the way the bishops and the pope continue to separate themselves from the views of the majority of the laity.

"It is no longer enough to say 'no' or to tell people that they have to be obedient or say something is not allowed," he said.

Msgr. Schuller said he would like the Vatican to give the group a chance to respond to the questions Pope Benedict XVI raised in his homily at this year's chrism Mass in St. Peter's Basilica, when the pope suggested that renewal will emerge through obedience and a focus on Jesus.

"He asked questions such as can disobedience be a way of reforming the church; is it the right thing? We want to answer these questions," Msgr. Schuller said.

In May the leadership of the Priests' Initiative wrote to the pope, requesting an opportunity to meet and discuss these issues, but so far there has been no response from Rome.

"We are waiting," he said.

The group's membership is growing, and its Austrian members network with other groups internationally. Cardinal Schonborn has been credited with circumventing an escalation of the standoff in Austria, and so far there has been no censure of members, though the cardinal has said Priests' Initiative members can no longer be appointed as deans in his diocese, and the Congregation for Clergy has warned the Austrian hierarchy that no member can hold diocesan leadership roles.

Msgr. Schuller said the group is angered by the amount of time and effort the Vatican has dedicated to accommodating the demands of the traditionalist Society of St. Pius X, a group said represents a "tiny minority."

"It is ridiculous. We are conveying the views and desires of the vast majority of Catholics, but the way Rome is acting you would think the SSPX speak for the majority. It is an inversion of reality," he told CNS.

The lack of will to give the group space to dialogue with the Austrian hierarchy or Vatican officials means the group believes it must continue to "move forward without such discussions," Msgr. Schuller said.

"We are calling on parish communities to make their own decisions as they face the possibility of running out of priests," he said. "We are suggesting that they shouldn't ask what will happen, but should decide for themselves what they want to be in the future. Then they can ask the bishops how they can help them.

"At the moment there is a very strong dependency on the bishops and their decisions," he said. "But there is no decision-making happening in the center of the church, and time is running out."

'AGT' semifinals: Andrew De Leon wows crowd

By Bruna Nessif, E! Online

With 24 acts going into the semifinals, it's no surprise that "America's Got Talent" is splitting the performances into two episodes. Regardless, we got to kick-off the beginning of the end on Tuesday night, so let's get straight into who performed and will be facing eliminations tomorrow.

Which four wildcards made it to the semifinals?

The show started off strong with an impeccable performance of "Ave Maria" by Andrew De Leon, which earned him a standing ovation from the crowd, but still got some flack from the judges. Howie Mandel brought up the fact that De Leon doesn't have any formal training and Sharon Osbourne said he needs to lose the gothic look if he wants to be taken seriously. Geez!

Todd Oliver and his "talking dog" were next. Oliver tried a different tactic by setting up his act as a late-night talk show and his pup was the guest. Cute idea. Regardless of what people may think of this act, the judges absolutely love it. "You are a headline act. Your material was spot on for this audience. You had them in the palm of your hand," Howard Stern said.

The crowd seemed to love watching Donovan and Rebecca, a very good-looking and strong married couple, show off their acrobatic strength and skill. But then again, it may have been their barely-there costumes.

Andrew De Leon gets a second chance!

A 14-year-old Edon Pinchot got the attention of all the young girls in the crowd when he sang One Direction's "What Makes You Beautiful." The person he didn't impress? Stern, who was "a little bit bored by that song." Hey, take that up with the writers.

The Scott Brothers did a dance routine that didn't seem to resonate with anybody once it was done. Sorry. Nothing too memorable here.

Freaky alert! Eric Dittelman, known as just "Dittelman," is a mind reader. No, seriously. He told Stern to color-in a sketch of his face on an easel and Dittelman produced a drawing that was almost identical to what Stern did! Howard said, "He deserves to go through."

Remember these OMG moments from America's Next Top Model?

Another standing ovation was given to contortionist and street dancer Turf, who included more dancing into tonight's routine. Stern, who has shown Turf love from the start, told the contestant, "I'm pulling for you."

Unfortunately, the beautiful voice of Bria Kelly wasn't enough for the judges. After performing Pink's "Perfect," the judges told her that she lacked emotion and needs stronger stage presence.

Joe Castillo was entertaining with his sand art creations. Especially when he was able to morph his art from one bird into two hands clasping and ultimately into two faces--one of them being Jesus. Kudos, sir.

Poor Kelly Osbourne got hurt on the AGT set

"The largest stringed instrument in the world" graced the AGT stage tonight when William Close played his giant Earth Harp. The judges absolutely loved it.

After Mandel picked a topic, Tom Cotter did what he does best--tell jokes. But the best part was they were actually funny! He cracked about "the best 28 semesters" of his life.

Last to perform was the theatrical hip-hop group Academy of Villains, who were great to close the show with all their lasers, smoke and red balloons. And although Sharon thought it was "incredible," Stern had to come in and say, "I got a little bit bored through it and was wishing it would be over."

Psssh.

Which performers should move on to the finals? Tell us on our Facebook page.

"Reaching for the Stars" will be broadcast from the red planet at 4 p.m. EDT Tuesday.

The broadcast will be part of a NASA educational event for students at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif.

?
According to NASA, members of the team that successfully landed the rover on Mars earlier this month will explain to students the mission and the technology behind the song's interplanetary transmission. will.i.am will then premiere "Reach for the Stars," a new composition about the singer's passion for science, technology, and space exploration.

The event will be streamed on the agency's website and broadcast on NASA TV.

will.i.am is a big NASA fan and has appeared in a NASA promotional video explaining how NASA technologies have helped increase production of clean water, provide remote medical care and solar electricity for refrigeration, and keep food fresh during its trip from field to market.

While will.i.am has the first song, the honor of the first human voice to be broadcast from another planet was reserved for NASA administrator Charlie Bolden.

Here's Mr. Bolden's message:

Hello. This is Charlie Bolden, NASA Administrator, speaking to you via the broadcast capabilities of the Curiosity Rover, which is now on the surface of Mars.

Since the beginning of time, humankind?s curiosity has led us to constantly seek new life?new possibilities just beyond the horizon. I want to congratulate the men and women of our NASA family as well as our commercial and government partners around the world, for taking us a step beyond, to Mars.

This is an extraordinary achievement. Landing a rover on Mars is not easy ? others have tried ? only America has fully succeeded. The investment we are making?the knowledge we hope to gain from our observation and analysis of Gale Crater, will tell us much about the possibility of life on Mars as well as the past and future possibilities for our own planet. Curiosity will bring benefits to Earth and inspire a new generation of scientists and explorers, as it prepares the way for a human mission in the not-too-distant future.

Thank you.

Evidence lacking on screening for kidney disease

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - There isn't enough evidence to recommend checking the kidney function of otherwise healthy people for signs of disease, a government-backed panel said on Monday.

But it's also not clear that using blood or urine tests to screen for chronic kidney disease causes much harm either, according to the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force.

"It's a common condition," said Dr. Joy Melnikow, a Task Force member from the University of California, Davis in Sacramento.

"I was actually struck by how little information there was."

Melnikow told Reuters Health that to recommend kidney screening, the panel would need evidence that testing healthy people - those without diabetes or high blood pressure in particular - would ultimately improve their health.

That would require both a sufficiently accurate test of kidney function as well as a proven treatment for those who test positive for kidney problems.

About one in ten adults has chronic kidney disease, in which the kidneys slowly stop being able to filter and remove waste and extra fluid from the blood.

Kidney disease typically doesn't come with any symptoms until its later stages when damage to the organs is advanced. The vast majority of people with the condition also have high blood pressure or the blood sugar disorder diabetes.

Because of that, recommendations from the American Diabetes Association, for example, call for regular kidney checks in diabetic people. But the current guidelines are only meant to cover healthy, symptom-free people without diabetes or high blood pressure.

Melnikow and the rest of the Task Force said it's unclear how accurate blood and urine tests are at measuring kidney function and how often they come back with false positives - an irregular result for what really is a working kidney.

False positives typically lead to additional testing and can cause healthy people to worry unnecessarily, researchers said.

The USPSTF also couldn't find evidence on whether treating people who are in the early stages of kidney disease but don't have symptoms does them any good in the long run.

If doctors are unsure of what they can do to help those people - and how sick they really are - labeling them with a diagnosis can be problematic, according to Dr. Ann O'Hare, a nephrologist from the University of Washington in Seattle and VA Puget Sound Health Care.

"The concern is that you're going to be telling a large number of people that they have a condition without having anything to offer them and being uncertain about the implications," O'Hare, who wasn't involved in the new guidelines, told Reuters Health.

She said the majority of people with kidney disease are elderly adults with only mildly diminished kidney function.

The new statement was published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, four months after the USPSTF released draft screening guidelines for comment on its website.

MARKETING SCREENING

In another article released in the same journal issue, researchers from the University of Oklahoma School of Community Medicine in Tulsa and the American College of Physicians point to the ethical concerns of marketing other unproven screening tests to the public.

Those direct-to-consumer tests include ultrasounds of the arteries around the heart to check for buildup, or of the heel to screen for osteoporosis.

"Patients can be coerced through unsubstantiated, misleading statements or omission of factual information into obtaining tests where the actual risk may outweigh the proven benefit," Dr. Erik Wallace and his colleagues wrote.

Australia reopens probe of 1982 anti-Israel bombings

Australian police Sunday reopened inquiries into the 1982 bombing of the Israeli consulate in Sydney and a Jewish club, reportedly after interviewing an extremist jailed over a blast on a Pan Am flight that year.

No one was killed but two people were injured in the attacks on the consulate and the Jewish Hakoah sports club in Bondi on December 23, 1982 -- crimes that have gone unsolved for almost 30 years.

But police reopened the case Sunday, publishing photographs of two male suspects, after a review of the Sydney bombings reportedly led them to convicted extremist Mohammed Rashed, in jail for a blast on Pan Am flight 830.

A Japanese teenager died and 15 others were wounded when a bomb exploded on the flight from Tokyo to Honolulu on August 11, 1982.

"This review, and a range of enquiries here and overseas, were able to establish that there were sufficient grounds to warrant a formal re-investigation into the bombings upon the Israeli consulate and Hakoah Club in 1982," said assistant commissioner Peter Dein, head of the counter-terrorism squad.

"It was luck more than anything else that no one was killed in these bombings, and while it is almost 30 years ago we know there are people out there living with the knowledge or guilt of these crimes."

Dein refused to confirm the link to Rashed but several media reports citing police sources close to the case said the Jordanian-born explosives expert had been interviewed by officers in the US and was key to the case being reopened.

Rashed was part of an Iraq-based pro-Palestinian group, 15 May, that targeted US and Israeli interests in the 1980s, and he received leniency in his Pan Am sentence for cooperating with international authorities as an informant.

Sydney police have long believed 15 May, named for the date of the first Arab-Israeli war, was linked to the Hakoah club and consulate bombings.

Dein said the investigation would apply "new technologies and investigative procedures to an historical crime".

Two people, including a Hungarian holocaust survivor, were wounded when a bomb went off in a stairwell of the Israeli consulate in central Sydney at 2:00 pm on December 23, 1982.

The second bomb, detonated about five hours later in the Hakoah Club's carpark, failed to explode properly and did not injure anyone, but there was extensive damage to the car it was in and two others nearby.

There were a "large number" of athletes inside the building at the time, according to police.

Autistic child banned for life from XSportFitness for the crime of ...

It was a day 8 year old Cooper looked forward to; ?playing with typical peers at the St. Charles, IL XSport childcare area, while his father played basketball. Cooper has HF Autism and ?had just learned how to climb rock walls (a task difficult for him due to PANDAS and motor planning weakness) and was eager to practice at this particular location, as it has a childsize rock wall in the childcare area. ?The childcare employees knew of his diagnosis, and were schooled as to the procedure if Cooper were to start exhibiting anxiety. ?Cooper had no history of problematic behavior here in the past, and was just happy to be with the typically developing children he models.

Cooper and his typically developing brother were playing a game out of the rock wall, and Cooper thought his brother was cheating. ?A typical brotherly argument ensued and Cooper's anxiety started to rise. ?Cooper became aggressive with his brother who used all the tools in his 6 year old 'I have a brother with autism toolbox' to diffuse the situation. ?Eventually, he had to tell staff. ?Cooper was placed in a time out where he kicked the walls and cried. ?The manager was then called, as was Cooper's father to come and pick him up.big bully? In front of Cooper, the manager, Ron Stickney, tells Cooper's dad that he can never ever bring him back to Xsport Fitness. ? Cooper looks right into Ron Stickney's eyes and says 'Shut up-I don't like your words'. ? Ron then adds that he is has a 'permanent lifetime ban'.

Mom is working, and Cooper runs into mom's place of employment wailing to mommy that 'I tried my best, but my body was so frustrated that my brother was cheating on the game....and now my feelings are so hurt because I can never ever go back to Xsport to climb the rock wall again....(sobbs)....it's not fair!'

A lifetime ban....Really? Permanent? Or Power Trip? Adults as Bullys.

I am not making excuses for my son. At least I am not trying to... Yes, I wish he could self regulate better and respond like a typical child would if he or she became frustrated..oh, how I hate that my child tortures himself and suffers living in that body that doesn't work way he wants it to. ?Yeah, he shouldn't have kicked the wall, and if I were there I would have had the checkbook ready to pay for any damage. ?Yes, it was socially inappropriate for him to tell an adult to 'Shut up'...we are working on this extensively (we are using our words just working on the filtering part). ?Did the 'Autism Society of Illinois' Tshirt my husband had on give you any clue about our son? ?Apparently not.

So, as his mom, as usual, I am especially annoyed, defensive, and so sad for these misunderstood children... as we all know the numbers are only growing. ?I read a recent proposed stat of by the year 2025, at the rate we are going, that ?1 out of every 2 children will be diagnosed with some form of autism spectrum disorder. ?I am his mom, so I am close to the situation of course, and unfortunately encounter this sort of discrimination, judgement, and plain ignorance, multiple times a day on a daily basis (makes you kind of an angry bird).

So, I decide to google 'autistic child banned' and these are some of the stories that came up...

http://www.thewhig.com/2011/05/14/autistic-child-banned-from-school-after-physical-outburst

http://acatholicview.blogspot.com/2008/05/autistic-boy-banned-from-church.html

More stories to google involving people with autism have played out in public recently. A California man was kicked out of a health club for screaming. A North Carolina boy was taken off a plane before takeoff after having a meltdown. A South Carolina girl was ordered out of a restaurant by the town?s police chief for crying. ?I wonder if they were permanently banned for a lifetime? Sarcasm.

I didn't expect sympathy, but I guess I didn't expect the ignorance of the majority of the comments posted (even those with children with autism!)about such instances.

Here is a fair sample of some of the comments regarding this?(autistic boy banned from church) story I read with sadness....

'He's biting and pissing and screaming and spitting and he's a hulking behemoth. Sit next to him on the subway and then spout off with the everyone should be treated exactly the same rhetoric. It's not realistic.'

'Some are not as gifted are your son, some are uncontrollable Unlike your son. Like the one who brought all of this, spitting/hitting/yelling. That is what must be curtailed, everyone deserves their space of comfort.' ? Editor's Note- Cooper is HF and gifted intellectually. ?He is not considered severe, in fact considered extremely mild and near recovered...this is not about the severity of the disorder or mental capacity-it is about comorbid anxiety (which can result in aggression), and neurological disease process.

'My dd is autistic and has had similar problems with aggression in the past. This family needs to look past just themselves and their son. He could seriously hurt himself or someone else. Or worse. If they can't physically restrain him, then they need to look into medications for his out of control actions. This boy is 6' 4" and 225lbs. and can start a vehicle on his own. That's just dangerous.?So, to me, it seems they aren't concerned about anyone besides themselves. Just my opinion.'

'I agree. They are hiding behind the word "discrimination". Just because your child has a Special Need or issue doesn't mean it is OK to let him deface things, touch others or put others in harms way. It is YOUR job as a parent to accommodate him and put him in an atmosphere that will help him avoid the need to be calmed, the embarrassment and the danger they are exposing him to. I guarantee he's bored at the church, and can't behave. What they are doing as parents is far worse than the church needing to protect others. Of course it's the first they heard - they are defensive, so nobody would dare bring it to them. The kid is getting into puberty, and they excuse pulling a girl into his lap? Hello. And the discipline needs to be structured differently, but he does need to be disciplined. But mostly, he needs to be removed from situations that cause him failure and put him and others at risk. Poor kid. The parents probably always made excuses for him, exhausting themselves and not helping him grow.'

'I don't know what is right. I can see both sides...

I do know there was a little boy, about 10 then, in my area that is autistic and he was really good with my daughter, who was then, about 2 years old. And then one day, out of the blue, he hit her. We were just passing him in the hallway and it happened very fast - he wasn't with his regular aid, I always suspected was part of it. My daughter was fine, it hurt, and I realize this boy has big problems but I was still a little miffed. Needless to say, I never have given him the opportunity to get near either of my children since then and never will.?So yes, I can see both sides and I'm really glad I'm not involved because it is a lose / lose situation for the family and the church.'

?

'I know it isn't the boy's fault but I believe the parents need to not use his disability as an excuse and take care of the situation before someone gets hurt. He needs some sort of help with his autism whether it be medication or the parent's educated on how to deal with it. I agree with the church because the parent's expect everyone else to deal with it instead of themselves. They are being selfish IMHO.'

?

These last two comments, for some reason shocked me.... just when I didn't think people could shock me anymore. ?Then I stumbled across a Catholic blog (I have always blogged about how our Catholic parish and school have been so?accommodating?and loving toward Cooper) and I appreciated humanity again. ?Here are a few comments from this blog (A Catholic View) and this story that touched me personally.

?

'I'm very torn about this issue. I feel for these parents. I have an autistic child. My fear is that stories like this one will paint all autistic children as loud, dangerous, and undesirable people to have in Mass. Before the birth of my son, I always believed that I could handle anything except a disabled child. What did God give me? A disabled child. I firmly believe that God gave me my son to teach me true love and devotion. It's easy to love others during the good times, but hard to love them when the going gets tough. My son's disruptions are usually talking and making the occasional odd sound or tic. Still, people stare. It's horrid and terrible to endure, especially in the ONE PLACE we should be shown love and understanding...the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. I pray that my son will be welcome despite his "odd" behavior. I have seen other children in church with disabilities, but autism seems to be on the receiving end of more judgmentalism than any other because these children look "normal" to outsiders and appear to be rude rather than disabled. I just ask others to try to understand and please stop staring. We are ALL created in God's image.'

'My foster kids were still small and relatively cute when they would act out in ways that still make me cringe when I think about them. And we were new to the parish, which didn't help.

In this situation, those parents NEED those graces. They NEED to be in church and experience the support of their parish. I'd suggest that the parishioners form a rotating schedule of people who would be willing to sit with Adam at home, so the parents can go to Mass unmolested.?

Most parishes are great about bringing meals to a shut-in, or Eucharist to the sick. This would be one more work of mercy that will make the angels sing.'

'Our Lord was the Lamb, but He was also the Lion of Judah and He spoke out when He encountered injustice and cruelty. So I am going to speak out on this topic.

For those of you who have sat in judgment of this boy and this family without having walked in their shoes, or any disabled person's shoes, perhaps you can pray for them, this priest, this parish, and for the Catholic Church. Perhaps when you have a severely autistic child of your own, you can put your judgments on this situation to work in your own lives.

Yes, Ms. Saxton, there is much this priest and parish could have done to help this family, I am certain.

Would Jesus have made this into a criminal matter as this priest and diocese has done by filing a criminal restraining order against this child and his family?

Please look up the therapeutic need for deep pressure for some autistic people (why his family would sit on him, and why he pulled the girl onto his lap).

The family and the church needed to work together.

If 1 in 10 people are disabled according to recent census data, why don't we see more persons with special needs at Mass? THIS story is a good example as to why. They are home instead of sitting at our Lord's Table of Plenty because the "closed" sign has been hung out on our church doors to those society ropes off as "other".'

'The reason that you do not see more autistic people in Church is that we are, overall, woefully?ignorant?and intolerant about the disorder.

PDD is a spectrum of related disorders, with autism at the extreme end. You have most likely seen it in a Catholic school or Confirmation class in the form of Asperger's syndrome - the kid who doesn't seem to be able to pick up on social cues and that everyone treats like garbage. What people don't understand is that the inability to process verbal and facial cues is neurological, we rely on part of our brain to help with that. So, the assumption is that the disability equates to lack of emotional depth. In reality, those with the disorder know that they are being rejected and belittled, yet everyone is surprised when they exercise the golden rule and treat others badly in return.

I cannot say how disruptive this situation was, but I would strongly suspect that just being himself, just being different, was as large a factor as the behaviors themselves. Of course, this is precisely the same sort of thinking that Jesus rebelled against in ministering to societies outcasts.?

Though, to be fair, lack of understanding contributes. For example, I would bet good money that the sitting had to do with providing tactile pressure, not restraint. Sensory integration, processing our senses, requires specific portions of our brain to be properly developed. That is why the boy sometimes has trouble with continence. So do many of the elderly in my parish, should they be driven away?

This is only a 'tough' situation if we adopt the model of faith endorsed by the Pharisee's. Read Matthew 25, this parish has no room for the boy, he is welcomed at the parish a town over. When both bodies are called before the Son of Man, what criteria will they be judged?

These are societies weakest members. We are directly instructed to serve them. If it is 'impractical' to?accommodate?them in the practice of our faith, that faith is, inherently, no longer Christian. Let's face it, all the ritual is meaningless if we specifically reject Christ's direct instructions.'

?

So..in closing...Cooper's brother (the one who got the brunt of any aggression (except maybe the walls a bit) at XSport today said 'Don't worry mom, I am going to be an?entrepreneur?when I grow up and buy this chain out so Coop won't be banned for his entire lifetime.

Harvard makes distortionfree lenses from gold and silicon, aims for the perfect image or signal

Imaging has been defined by glass lenses for centuries, and even fiber optics haven't entirely escaped the material's clutch. Harvard's School of Engineering and Applied Sciences might have just found a way to buck those old (and not-so-old) traditions. A new 60-nanometer thick silicon lens, layered with legions of gold nanoantennas, can catch and refocus light without the distortion or other artifacts that come with having to use the thick, curved pieces of glass we're used to -- it's so accurate that it nearly challenges the laws of diffraction. The lens isn't trapped to bending one slice of the light spectrum, either. It can range from near-infrared to terahertz ranges, suiting it both to photography and to shuttling data. We don't know what obstacles might be in the way to production, which leads us to think that we won't be finding a gold-and-silicon lens attached to a camera or inside a network connection anytime soon. If the technology holds up under scrutiny, though, it could ultimtately spare us from the big, complicated optics we often need to get just the right shot.

Dhingana, ?India?s Spotify?, introduces ads, snags key Facebook exec as an advisor

Indian music specialist?Dhingana, often referred to as ?India?s Spotify?,?has upped its efforts to monetise its 11 million-strong userbase after it announced the introduction of an advertising platform on its service.

First started in 2007 by US-based twin brothers Snehal and Swapnil Shinde, Dhingana has rolled out an ?immersive advertising platform? to give brands and companies an opportunity to reach fans of Indian music in the country and the world over.

The company believes that Dhingana adverts will be particularly appealing for entertainment brands ? such as movie studios, music labels ? as well as mobile operators and other firms seeking to reach Internet savvy Indians.

Speaking to TNW earlier this year, Snehal said that the service?s business model would include advertising, which will complement the existing revenue from user subscriptions.?Ads can be served using a range of different variables, including geo-targeting, as well as more specific user-based metrics, he explained.

Commenting on the launch of the ad platform, CEO?Snehal said:

Globally, over 11 million Indian music fans listen to their favourite music on Dhingana. We believe that this is a great motivation for brands looking at innovative avenues to reach out to them. This led us to develop a highly intuitive advertising platform.

That?s not all, however, and Dhingana has bagged a huge name in the Web advertising space after?Gokul Rajaram, Facebook?s product director for advertising, joined its advisory board.

Former Google executive Rajaram is highly rated, and is a figure who is key to Facebook?s monetisation push. His involvement is a major coup and unsurprisingly the Shinde brothers are ?thrilled? to have him on board.

?Gokul has extensive experience in creating user-friendly and highly profitable experiences for social and mobile platforms. His experience will be invaluable as we expand the service to reach more users,? COO?Swapnil says.

Rajaram himself paid tribute to Dhingana?s progress, saying that the company has ?been quick in tapping the huge impact that mobile is making in India.?

Dhingana was one of a number of services that saw a huge boost in usage after joining Facebook?s open graph initiative. The company hit a then-record 10.5 million users in April, which it said made it the biggest legal streaming site in India.

Barrel 135, Williamsport, Japanese Photography, Figurative Painting

Converge Gallery and Barrel 135 are pleased to announce a showing of artwork by Misako Oba and Tina Yesenofski at Barrel 135. The work will hang from September 7 ? September 30, 2012. Barrel 135 is located at 135 West Fourth Street, Williamsport, Pa 17701.

About the Artists

Misako Oba?s work explores human life as a journey, and is a metaphor for our lives. It is both a deep examination of her soul and an exploration of universal experiences. In her work you will often find the contrast of darkness and light. It also depicts the beauty of life with its transient nature.

She has spent much of her career exploring these themes using photography including a traditional chemical process such as gelatin silver prints and toning. As she continues pursuing art, she has expanded to mixed-media painting, especially incorporating text, photographic images and encaustic that based on the individual concept of each series.

Tina Yesenofski?s portraits are about discovering insecurities in individuals, but presenting their bodies with such solidity that it glorifies them despite their weathered, awkward, androgynous, or sickly characteristics. She presents them in poses that are powerful rather than submissive, because the individuals she chooses tend to have an intense lust for life, despite their physical awkwardness.?Through her portraits, she investigates the ironic contrast between a decrepit outer shell and vivacity within.

Often, her portraits seem to diminish or skew the sexual attributes of the figures. By making the sexuality of the figures less apparent, she makes them less vulnerable to or available for stereotyping.?She wants to liberate these figures from society?s harsh criticism of their physical deformities and unconventional physical appearances.?By creating a beautiful drawing, or beautiful artwork based on an individual who does not conform to cultural notions of beauty, it becomes apparent that the individual is in fact quite deserving of rumination.

(AP Photo/David J. Phillip)

(AP) ? Hours after Roger Clemens agreed to join the Sugar Land Skeeters, he was back on the field playing in an over-50 softball league.

And the ultra-competitive Clemens, now a half-century old, was quick to point out just how well he did against that group of geezers.

"I hit two homers, by the way," he said.

Things will be a bit tougher on Saturday when he is scheduled to start for the independent Atlantic League team at home against Bridgeport. The right-hander agreed to play for the team on Monday and was introduced on Tuesday.

Whether this all leads to Clemens pitching in the major leagues ? the seven-time Cy Young Award winner played that down, conceding he's nowhere near big league pitching shape.

"I'm 50 years old. We're just going to go out and have fun with this and make it fun for the fans," said Clemens, who has a touch of gray stubble on his chin but still sports a shock of blond highlights in his hair.

Clemens didn't understand all the rules of his old-man softball league at first. When he hit his first home run and dashed to first base, his teammates told him to stop. He thought it was because home runs weren't allowed. It turned out that the over-50 set doesn't see the need to run all of the bases on a homer.

"I really play in that league for the exercise and the fun," he said.

He laughed off questions about playing professionally at an age when he qualifies for an AARP card.

"I hope nothing breaks and I hope I don't pull anything," a still fit-looking Clemens said.

Some believe his return to the minor leagues is the first step to another comeback in the major leagues, where he last pitched for the New York Yankees in 2007 at age 45. Clemens is set to appear on the Hall of Fame ballot going to voters late this year. If he plays in a major league game this year, his Hall consideration would be pushed back five years.

He isn't sure how he'll be perceived by voters when his name appears on the ballot.

"Sure, the Hall of Fame is great, I've told people that. But it's not going to change my life either way," he said. "But if there's something there that somebody feels like they have a grudge or want to hold something against you, I can't control that one bit."

Clemens said thinking about a big league comeback is premature.

He dismissed the theory that the minor league appearance was a step on the path to a big league return.

"I've been to the major leagues and back a couple of times," he said. "I've retired and unretired, so I wouldn't consider thinking that far ahead. I'm just going to try to get through Saturday. I think I can compete a little bit."

A return at his age wouldn't be all that outlandish, considering that Jamie Moyer returned from elbow ligament replacement surgery to start for the Colorado Rockies this season. Clemens chuckled when asked about Moyer.

"People are trying to ingrain that in my mind that 50 is now the new 40," he said. "But I'm not buying it because I'm still having to pack myself in a lot of ice."

He says he talks to new Houston Astros owner Jim Crane often but that he has not talked about pitching for the Astros and that he doesn't see that happening.

He isn't committing to playing more than one game for the Skeeters, who play in a Houston suburb, saying he wants to see how Saturday goes first.

Clemens was accused by former personal trainer Brian McNamee in the Mitchell Report on drugs in baseball of using steroids and HGH, allegations Clemens denied before Congress. The Justice Department began an investigation concerning whether Clemens had lied under oath, and in 2010 a grand jury indicted him on two counts of perjury, three counts of making false statements and one count of obstructing Congress.

He was acquitted of all the charges on June 19 after a 10-week trial and has largely stayed out of the public spotlight until now.

He's glad to be talking about baseball again instead of that difficult chapter in his life.

"Everybody has their own opinion and they dwell on that so much," he said. "In between all of that, handling that business up there and doing what was right for me and my family and taking that head on, I was still doing the work that I've always done. So it wasn't gloomy or depressing."

Clemens had two great seasons with the Astros after he turned 40, going 18-4 with a 2.98 ERA in 2004 to win his record seventh Cy Young Award. He was 13-8 with a career-low 1.87 ERA in 2005.

Tal Smith, a longtime former Astros executive who is now a special advisor to the Skeeters, is one person who wouldn't be surprised if Clemens made a comeback in the majors.

"Knowing Roger and how competitive he is and what great shape he is in, and the fact that Jamie Moyer pitched close to 50 and Nolan Ryan pitched well into his late 40s, if anybody can do it, Roger Clemens can do it," he said.

Clemens earned about $160 million and won 354 games in a 24-year career with the Red Sox, Blue Jays, Yankees and Astros. His 4,672 strikeouts are third-most and he was named to 11 All-Star games.

Now he will see what he has left for the Skeeters that have a roster which includes former major league pitchers Tim Redding and Scott Kazmir and Jason Lane, a teammate of Clemens' on Houston's 2005 World Series team.

Smith believes this is a great opportunity for Clemens and he thinks it could change some opinions as a possible Hall of Fame vote approaches.

"I hope this helps," Smith said. "I think voters should remember that he's been acquitted of all charged and that he never tested positive. I hope this story dies down in future years."

Clemens and Skeeters manager Gary Gaetti have been talking about this since April. But he received another push toward the field early this summer when he visited Dr. James Andrews in Florida for a checkup.

"He said: 'The MRI looked great. Your shoulder looks like you're 30. You should go pitch ? just kidding,'" Clemens said Andrews told him.

It was then that he started thinking he could actually play for the Skeeters. After throwing for the team on Monday, where his fastball was clocked at 87, the multimillionaire got himself a new gig.

"We're going to have fun with this and see if I can get through a few innings without Gary having to go to the bullpen, and we'll see where it goes from there," Clemens said.

Smith takes issue with those who think this is simply a media stunt. He said that the Skeeters regularly sell out Saturday night games and that there were only 500 tickets available for this Saturday's game before Clemens was signed.

"I can understand why he's doing it," Smith said. "He loves baseball. He love the competition. Baseball has been his life and there's no reason he shouldn't try to continue it. If he's successful it just adds to his legend, and if he's not, it was fun."

Top Taiwan politician calls for Chen's parole

The mayor of Taipei, a political heavyweight within Taiwan's ruling Kuomintang (KMT) party, called Tuesday for medical parole for jailed ex-president Chen Shui-bian.

Hau Lung-pin is the highest-level politician yet from the China-friendly KMT to call for the release of Chen, whose anti-Beijing stance caused considerable controversy during his time in office from 2000 to 2008.

"The question of granting former president Chen medical parole should be handled with a positive attitude," Hau said.

"Giving Chen medical parole will prevent our society from dividing even further, which is something Taiwan cannot afford at this moment."

George Tsai, a political science professor from the Chinese Culture University in Taipei, said he could not rule out that Hau's comments were a "trial balloon" released by the KMT to gauge the public's view on letting Chen go.

Hau's surprise statement was hailed by the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), which Chen once led.

The DPP has been pushing for Chen's release, citing concerns voiced by several doctors who recently visited him in prison, though justice officials said he has been properly treated.

The 61-year-old is serving a prison term of more than 17 years on bribery charges, and also faces several additional graft charges stemming from his time as president.

Chen and family members have been accused in a complex network of laundering millions of US dollars by sending political donations and secret diplomatic funds abroad, and taking kickbacks on government contracts.

Chen insists the legal action against him is a vendetta carried out by Taiwan's current Beijing-friendly government in retaliation for his pro-independence stance while in power.
